Baselitz – Academy, a major retrospective of works by Georg Baselitz curated by Kosme de Barañano, is the first exhibition by a living artist at the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice. The exhibition traces the critical junctures in the artist’s extraordinary sixty-year career through paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures, including rarely seen works exploring the artist’s relationship with Italy and the academic tradition.

Volume 2 of this exceptional catalogue raisonné project compiles the unique works on paper that Edward Ruscha (b. 1937) made between 1977 and 1997, the artist’s midcareer period, during which he achieved international renown. More than 1,000 works are documented, among them hundreds that have rarely, or never, been exhibited or published. Highlights include Ruscha’s inimitable word and phrase works, made in organic materials, pastel, or acrylic; compositions featuring signature images (windows, ships, silhouetted objects and figures, and film closing credits); and drawings and studies related to important public commissions for the Miami-Dade Public Library, the Denver Central Library, and the Getty Center. Each work is catalogued with a beautiful color reproduction, collection details, full chronological provenance, exhibition history, and bibliographic references. Essays by Lisa Turvey and Gwen Allen complete the volume, providing critical frameworks and historical context for the art within.

Verrocchio: Sculptor and Painter of Renaissance Florence is the first-ever monographic exhibition in the United States on Andrea del Verrocchio (c. 1435–1488), the innovative artist, painter, sculptor, and teacher whose pupils included Leonardo da Vinci, Pietro Perugino, and likely Sandro Botticelli as well. The exhibition examines the wealth and breadth of Verrocchio’s extraordinary artistry by bringing together some 50 of his masterpieces in painting, sculpture, and drawing that allow viewers to appreciate how his work in each art form stimulated creativity in the others.

Katharina Grosse approaches painting as an experience in immersive subjectivity. With a spray gun, she disconnects the artistic act from the hand, stylizing gesture as a propulsive mark. The resulting pictures are distinct, but never predetermined. Spatial tensions rise through shifts in chromatic temperature.
